At first glance, all the activities on each page seem disconnected. But this is not a book for just one glance. The intricate illustrations invite readers to peer carefully at both the individual letters as well as notice the story that is developing along the way. Something is being built here, and it is not until the last two pages that children see what all this industriousness is about.
Bright, flat background colors allow the creatively developed letters to shine. Each one is a masterpiece in itself that would be fun to see as actual sculptures. Professor Whiskerton, the peg-legged leader of the mouse duo, presents new concepts for each letter al the while adding the items shown A through Y to add up to Z. This is a very fast read for the adult member of the group, the entire book containing less words total than you have read in this review so far, but it is a very welcome addition to the reading shelf for our granddaughter. A big thank you to Lisa Falkenstern and Goodreads for this book.

Two mice work hard to build the various things represented by the words and by the time they get to Z, they complete their project. Although each element is not visible, they were clearly incorporated. This one Aside from the topic choice, this is just your typical ABC book. This one clever aspect goes a long way to redeem this otherwise straightforward alphabet book. While the words have little to do with Steampunk, the visual aspect does a fair job with its rich colours, gears, and the Victorian clothes the mice wear. Children will surely pick up a book with such a interesting cover and title, yet they may find it a difficult read due to all the uncommon words.

The Bean hasn't cottoned to this one yet, which I think is quite the crime. I love the detailed illustrations in this one, which features a pair of mouse inventors doing generally silly things with Rube Goldberg-esque machines. In other words, steampunk.
I'll keep trying it on him once a week or so until he grows into it because I'm so fond of it. Definitely not the typical ABC book! Jul 05, Heidi rated it it was amazing. Not only are the illustrations fabulous, but so is the invention that everything leads toward. Each letter represents something related to this mysterious invention. The clever hints that are hidden along the way were fun to find and ponder. It was especially clever the way the invention fits right into the alphabet along with everything else.

This is an absolutely gorgeous version of an ABC book. I am not into steampunk and yet I thoroughly enjoyed this book where A is for Anvil and B is for Bolt.

It is beautifully illustrated and my six year old grandson learned a lot of new words as we followed the ABC's that had words made from things that some people would see as junk Unlike some books that look like a little girl's book, this book would appeal to little boys as well as girls.
I enjoyed it and enjoyed sharing it with my grandson. Apr 17, Julie Grasso rated it it was amazing. I saw this in my Amazon recommendations, and just could not resist. I was so glad when it finally loaded as it was on pre-order. This is such a cool book. It's a simple ABC in essence, but every illustration is worthy of framing and placing on your wall.

I was kind of hoping all of the individual pieces represented by the letters of alphabet would all be part of a larger steampunk thing in the final spread, but was disappointed. I was also a little disappointed by the artwork. The back flap says the author sculpted items using hardware to prepare for illustrating this book. I longed for mixed media. Photos of her sculptures would've had such a nice touch. Apr 06, Darlene Cruz rated it it was amazing. I love the colors and the two mice dressed in Victorian clothing. As I read through the book, I was dumbfounded by each letter depicting the steampunk look, metal gadgets.
How the author created tools to form a letter but stressing there usefulness. This is a wonderful book to get for your little one, especially learning their ABC's.
